Buying a Sleeping Bag: Which Temperature Rating Actually Counts?
The situation comes up in forums again and again, almost word for word: first night outdoors, a sleeping bag with a "temperature limit of 0 degrees", the night was 10 degrees, and you sweated instead of shivering. Plus the bag fills half of a 42-litre pack. So swap it for a thinner one? The short answer: probably not. The long answer is worth reading, because it clears up a few misunderstandings that can get expensive when you buy a sleeping bag.
Three numbers on the label, only one counts
Sleeping bags are measured to a standard (ISO 23537, formerly EN 13537). That produces three temperatures, and they mean very different things:
- Comfort: A person lying relaxed on their back does not get cold. This is the number you should buy by.
- Limit: A sleeper curled up, and fairly insensitive to cold, just about makes it through the night. Anyone who sleeps normally is already cold here.
- Extreme: A survival threshold. Six hours without cold injury; sleep is out of the question. This number is on the label because it sounds impressive.
"Temperature limit" on the label often means the limit, not the comfort rating. The gap between the two is typically 5 degrees. So a "0-degree sleeping bag" can be one you sleep peacefully in at 5 degrees, or one you shiver in at 5 degrees. Before buying (and before swapping), it pays to check which of the three numbers is meant.
Too warm is the smaller problem
The thought "better too warm than too cold, you can always take something off" is right, and it still applies after the purchase. If it gets too warm, you open the zip, stick a leg out or spread the bag over you like a blanket. If it gets too cold, at some point you are wearing everything the pack has to offer and you are still cold. The two mistakes are not symmetrical. One costs comfort, the other costs the night.
On top of that: a mild summer night proves very little. In the mountains, nights around freezing are possible even in high summer, and all the more so at 2000 metres. Anyone woken by a few snowflakes at 2500 metres in September is grateful for every degree of reserve. That is not theory; reports like these turn up in every outdoor forum.
When a swap does make sense after all
There is one case where a thinner bag is well justified: you do overnighters or weekend trips where the forecast reliably covers the night. Then you can replan or stay home if a cold snap is announced, and a bag with 5 to 10 degrees comfort is enough. On trips lasting several weeks, or away from predictable escape routes, the argument turns around: there, the reserve is not caution, it is equipment.
Layers make the system flexible, not swapping
Instead of replacing one bag with another, you can add to the one you have:
- Liner (hut sleeping bag): Depending on the material it adds a few degrees, packs small, and is compulsory in huts anyway. Polyester is cheap and dries quickly, cotton is pleasant but heavy, silk is light and the nicest against the skin, but expensive. Special thermal liners promise up to 8 degrees; the manufacturers' figures are optimistic, but the direction is right.
- Base layers for sleeping: They not only keep you warm, they protect the bag. Otherwise sweat and skin salts migrate into the fill, salt holds moisture, and damp fill insulates less well. Down in particular appreciates this: it can only be washed rarely and with some effort, and a liner or long underwear catches sweat and skin oils before they clog the fill.
- Count the insulated jacket in: A down jacket you have with you in the evening anyway lowers the usable temperature of the bag by several degrees. It weighs nothing extra, because it is already in the pack.
A 0-degree bag plus a liner therefore covers everything from a frosty night to a summer evening. A second, thin bag for the valley is a luxury, not a must.
The packed-size problem has other solutions
If the bag fills half your pack, the temperature rating is usually not the problem — the fill and the cut are:
- Down instead of synthetic: For the same warmth, down packs smaller, and with high-quality fill considerably smaller. Both fills lose loft over the years, but not equally permanently: with down the loss comes from oils and dirt and can largely be washed back out; with synthetics the fibres kink during packing, and that stays. If you rarely compress your bag hard, you will notice little of it. Down costs more and does not like moisture; if you buy it, look for certified sourcing (RDS or equivalent).
- Quilt instead of sleeping bag: Leaves out the flattened, ineffective underside and saves another 20 to 30 percent in weight and packed size. When that works and when it does not is covered in the quilt guide.
- Compression: A compression sack halves the volume of many bags. Just never store the bag compressed.
And more cold comes from below than most people think: on the ground the fill is squashed flat and barely insulates, so the mat takes over. Which R-value is enough for what is covered in the sleeping mat guide. A warm bag on a thin mat still makes for a cold night.
How to decide
- Which number is on your bag: comfort or limit? Clear that up first, then compare.
- How predictable are your nights? Overnighters with a forecast: 5 to 10 degrees comfort is enough. Several days in the mountains: keep the 0 degrees comfort.
- Does the warmth bother you, or the packed size? Warmth you regulate with the zip. Packed size you solve with down, a quilt or compression — not with a thinner fill that you will miss in September.
So the bag from the opening question stays. What may change is everything around it: add a liner, check the mat, perhaps buy down next time. Anyone who thinks of the degrees as a system rather than as one number on a label is cold less often and carries less.
