You'll find the big chains everywhere. This page collects the others: small workshops and one-person operations in the German-speaking world and across Europe that design, and often sew, lightweight gear themselves. Buy here and you get short paths, real people to talk to, and equipment with a recognizable signature behind it.

Backpacks

• WeitLäufer (Breisgau) — ultralight packs made from high-tech laminates, handmade in Germany, from the thru-hike pack to the made-to-order model built to your measurements.

Quilts and Sleep Systems

• GramXpert (Slovenia / EU) — quilts and Apex insulation made to order: you decide the size and the amount of insulation, and only then is it made.

Clothing

• 10gram Equipment (High Black Forest) — ultralight, active midlayers; developed in the Black Forest, sewn in small batches in Italy. Born out of a Pacific Crest Trail experience with too much gear.

Accessories

• Tidy Gear (Austria) — trail gaiters ("Tidy Gaiters"), hand-sewn wallets, and waterproof liners; the European answer to hard-to-get US models.

Packrafts

• Anfibio (Dresden) — packraft pioneers from the very beginning: their own boat development and accessories for everyone who combines hiking and paddling.

Groundsheets and Sleeping Mats

• XFOIL (Osnabrück) — ultralight groundsheets made from a purpose-developed high-tech film, plus the XMAT sleeping mat; assembled in a workshop employing people with disabilities. Weights are stated openly, and worn-out film is taken back and recycled.

Who Makes the List?

Three criteria: small, own design, direct sales. We don't include pure retailers — that's what shops are for.
